Recent advances in the detection and management of psychological distress and depression in cancer and palliative care

Abstract
Despite many advances in symptom management at the end of life, it is acknowledged that the assessment and management of psychological distress and depression remains challenging. This presentation will provide an overview ofrecent evidence based research focussing on assessment of depression and psychological and add to the debate of whether routine screening should be implemented for all patients. The management of psychological distress and depressionincorporatingcollaborative and patient centred approaches will also be discussed. A recently completed large longitudinal study of over 600 palliative care patients carried out at the University of Liverpool willbe highlightedas willinternational work in this area and areas where future research is needed will also be discussed.
